Pediatric Home Hospitalization

Home hospitalization: It is defined as a model of hospital care aimed at providing care at home to acute patients, whose biological, psychological, social and geographical conditions allow it.

It is an alternative to conventional internment that provides clinical assistance continuously under the surveillance of the pediatric hospitalization unit team and always according to the will of the patient and his family.

This project, which started its activity in June 2023 in a partnership with the Prof.Dr.Fernando da Fonseca Hospital (HFF | ULS Amadora), covers two densely populated municipalities (Amatera and Sintra), with great population growth in the last decade and with a high immigration rate.

The project aims to optimize hospital vacancies, reduce the number of nasocomial (hospital) infections, and improve the humanization of care with greater parental involvement, since parents can maintain their habitual family activity and finally reduce labor absenteeism, providing in certain circumstances the possibility of maintaining telework.

Current pediatrics, constantly evolving in the approach of the various pathologies, advocates the shortest possible permanence of children/adolescents in a hospital environment.

The Department of Children and Youth (DCJ) of the HFF, in partnership with the Gil Foundation, follows this new trend and intends to develop the optimization of home care.

With the evolution of technological means and scientific knowledge, the needs of our children and young people have been changed, in this sense, providing specialized, coordinated and global health care in hospitalization and/or at home, newborns, children and young people in a situation of suffering due to complex chronic disease and disease Limiting / Threatening of Life, as well as to their families, through the promotion of their well-being and quality of life, should be a common objective for all pediatric services, thus justifying the replication of this project with other hospital partners.
